Penya is a percussion driven, electronic quartet led by producer and multi instrumentalist Magnus PI.

Penya's percussive wanderings in Cuba, Turkey, Morocco, India, Peru and Tanzania have garnered a tribal, alternative dance floor take on Afro-Latin rhythms.

Many of Penyas' songs touch on ancient Afro-Cuban melodies sung by the band’s multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Lilli Elina, whilst other tracks are wide open electronic groove scapes that draw on percussion don Jim Le Ms experiences as a ceremonial Bata drummer. Viva Msimang's dubbed-out trombone improvisations, percussion and backing vocal contributions complete the Penya soundscape.

Penyas' releases have been hailed by Gilles Peterson and  Tom Ravenscroft, (BBC 6 music), Nick Luscomb (BBC Radio 3), Jeremy Sole (KRCW) Worldwide FM (Thristian and Will LV), Bonobo, Band Camp, Best Before (Channel 4), Boiler Room, DJ Khalab, NTS, Soho and Radar Radio

Penya's debut LP SUPERLIMINAL is now available via On the corner Records

Stamp the Wax

"Dance floor ready afrofunk meets Latin rhythms and lo-fi electronics in this third release from London-based ensemble Penya. A follow-up to their Acelere EP, Super Liminal mixes hypnotic, syrupy percussions, with bata drumming extravaganzas, trombone improvs and dubby blips and bops. Sure to provide much needed heat to fuel the shoulder shimmies and hip grooves for many months to come"

The Vinyl Factory

“Penya is a group that knows percussion and its connection to the heart. The Afro-Latin collective’s latest Penya Investigations release on cassette is true testament to this – as is their forthcoming Acelere EP. Here, they look to expand their vision with originals and remixes, all guaranteed to be dance floor selects……. the vocals blend with tribal percussion, demanding total surrender to the music. It’s a track that breathes new life”

Boiler Room Premiere

“Penya’s immaculate percussion section combined with the Cumbia-inspired vocal delivery, creates what just might be a euphoric summer anthem”

Best Before (channel 4)

"Meditative and organic music for the home and dance floor”

Nick Luscombe, BBC Radio 3 Late Junction

"This track feels like it’s being spun by an Afro-Jazz DJ at the end of a three day bender. The genius behind this wondrous piece is multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Magnus PI”

Tom Robinson’s Fresh on the net (BBC 6 Music)

“those Cuban Rumba experiments go dancing with Haitian House”

Test Pressing

"Sonorous, tribal, mystical and damned fine pieces of percussion led alternative dance floor action! Search it Out is the spiritual samba I’ve been waiting for!”

Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s )

It’s just so refreshing to hear this sort of material in this day and age. “Acelere” is a triumphant, funky ballad with buoyant South American vocals and an African sort of vibe
